Mediation is considered one of the oldest forms of mental and spiritual practices all over. Although nobody can truly say what the exact history of meditation is, there are some speculations about this ancient practice.
Most scholars and documents say that the history of meditation can be traced some 5,000 years ago when the effects of the practice were discovered by ancient men by staring into the flames of fire that if flickering. From then on, several medication techniques were developed and began to spread across its continent of origin, Asia.
Only in the '60s and '70s that meditation become a hit in the United States. From then on, so many variations have spread across the globe.
A state wherein a person is in deep concentration on a specific object of thought or awareness, meditation is considered one of the oldest yet most effective means of relaxing the mind, the emotions, as well as the soul. This practice usually involves a person's attention, allowing it to turn into a single point of reference. Because of its effectiveness in leading a person's consciousness to a higher level than that of a common person, meditation is now being practiced by millions of people all over the world.
The history of meditation dates people back to when it was a very important constituent of various religions in the Eastern part of the world. Deriving its roots from the Latin word "meditation," which means "all types mental or physical exercise," the meaning of meditation has also evolved through the years. Today, the practice is known as "inward reflection" or "contemplation."
As years went by, people who practice meditation were able to come up with various disciplines. These involve a very wide range of psychophysical and spiritual aspects or a combination of both that can lead to that total enhancement of a person's higher level of mental concentration as well as spirituality.
People who are planning to get into meditation or are just interested in its seemingly limitless possibilities must understand the basics of the ancient spiritual practice and familiarize themselves with the various forms of meditation today that include "Bodhidharma," "Hinduism," "Bah ' Faith," "Buddhism," "Christian meditation," "Islam Meditation," "Jainism," "Judaism," "Sikhism," and "Taoism."
Because they are derived from different cultures, individual forms have their understanding of meditation and also have different sets of practices that come with it. In meditation, it is also very significant to note that these include physical requirements through different physical postures so the practice can be carried out well.
The most popular postures ever since the history of meditation started include: sitting, supine, and standing. These postures will vary depending on the origin of the meditation you wish to follow. It is also important to note that elements involved in basic traditional meditation have been a large part of the history of meditation. These four elements should include a quiet place, a comfortable posture, a visible object to where the person can turn his or her attention as well as a passive attitude to make the practice truly effective.
Ever since the history of meditation has inspired a lot of people to increase their level of spirituality as well as enhance the power of their minds. Although there is no definite proof that will trace the history of meditation, people of today as well as of those future generations will continue to practice it because of the benefits it brings.
There are no special tricks to meditating; no special posture or breathing rhythm is required. Once you have gotten the knack of it you can meditate anywhere during any activity. Some readers have succeeded in reaching this altered state of consciousness while reading about one of my clients sand meditation, perhaps you too may realize this transformational state of consciousness as you read on…
Sometimes meditation opens a door into the mysteries of creation. If we allow ourselves to pass through this door there is no telling what we may encounter on the other side. Do not become discouraged if you have tried to meditate in the past and not gotten any remarkable results. Meditation is a mystical process and it may take a while to learn how to quiet your mind and open yourself to all the present moment has to offer you.
My clients meditation began while sitting on a beach. their hands were sandy. They rubbed their thumb and forefinger together feeling the grains of sand between them slipping away until only a single grain of sand remained.
They could feel the shape of the grain of sand distinctly as they rolled it back and forth between their thumb and forefinger.
The longer they rolled the grain of sand about the more defined their awareness of the grain of sand became. The more detailed their experience of the grain of sand became the larger it appeared to be.
While they could feel the tiny grain of sand trapped between their thumb and finger roll about across the grooves and ridges of their fingerprints the grain of sand appeared to be growing larger and larger as They contemplated it.
The grain of sand continued to grow, encompassing the beach and then the world. Before long the grain of sand had grown to an infinite size and it now encompassed all of creation; yet they still held the tiny grain of sand between their thumb and forefinger, rolling it about across the grooves and ridges of their fingerprints.
The tiny grain of sand was intimately connected to every part of creation and all of creation existed within it, even as it existed within their grasp. They communed with the grain of sand, aware of its infinite connectedness to everything else; through the medium of the grain of sand, they became aware of their infinite connectedness with all of creation.
The sand spoke to them of eternity. It told them tales about creation and the infinite nature of our existence in creation. From the grain of sand, they learned that every tiniest part of creation is a living being experiencing creation and sharing in the process whereby creation makes everything manifest.
Their meditation with a grain of sand always produced a feeling of intense bliss. It was an eternal meditation that transcended the time and place where it began to continue throughout all of creation. From time to time they would return to this meditation, engrossed by the wisdom and experience of a single tiny grain of sand.
